- 01
Pour the lukewarm water into your mixing bowl.

- 02
Add the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Give it a stir and set aside until it's foamy. About 10 minutes.

- 03
Add the sugar, egg, butter (Melted and cooled) and milk.

- 04
Add the flour and salt.

- 05
Grate in about half a teaspoon of nutmeg. You could use the ground one if that's what you have available, or just leave it out completely.

- 06
Mix well to combine.

- 07
Flour your work surface and knead the dough until it is smooth and stretchy. About 10 to 15 minutes. You can also use a mixer.

- 08
Transfer the dough into an oiled bowl, cover and place in a warm spot until it doubles in size. About 1 hour 30 minutes

- 09
Deflate the dough and knock the air out.

- 10
Divide into 4 equal pieces and shape into balls.

- 11
Working with one dough at a time, roll it out to about a 10-inch circle.

- 12
Transfer to a lined baking tray and add one heaping tablespoon of jam or chocolate spread or sprinkle the top with some cinnamon sugar.

- 13
Spread the jam, leaving some space by the edges.

- 14
Roll out the rest of the dough and stack them on each other with jam or your desired filling in between.

- 15
Use a pizza cutter to trim the edges so as to get a somewhat round shape.

- 16
Use a glass cup to make an indent on the dough.

- 17
Using a pizza cutter or a knife, cut into 16 strips.

- 18
Take 2 strips and twist them away from each other, then bring them together and press the edges tightly.
If you're not getting it, watch the recipe video below. It's simpler than it looks.

- 19
Cover loosely with cling wrap or a kitchen napkin for about 30 minutes. It does not need to double in size.

- 20
Brush the top with egg or milk and bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven for 22 to 26 minutes.

- 21
Remove from the oven and cool slightly. Serve with a dusting of icing sugar.
